PLANT CHARACTERISTICS & GROWING AREAS

Ocimum Gratissimum Oil (Vietnamese Holy Basil Oil), also known as white basil or wild basil, scientifically named Ocimum gratissimum, belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It is a herbaceous plant, 1-2m tall, with brownish-purple stems. The upper part of the stem is light green and covered with lots of tiny hairs.

The leaves of Ocimum Gratissimum grow opposite each other, with long stalks of 1-2cm and serrated edges. Its flowers are pale purple or white, arranged in elongated clusters. The fruit is enveloped by floral bracts.

In Vietnam, there are two types: Ocimum sanctum L. (purple holy basil) and Ocimum gratissimum L. (white holy basil), both belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Purple Holy basil is a herbaceous species, widely used as a medicinal plant in many countries. Its leaves have a characteristic aroma and are commonly used as a spice, in shampoo, or for medicinal purposes.

Currently, Ocimum Gratissimum is mainly cultivated in the northern mountainous regions of Vietnam, such as Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, and neighboring provinces. It is often grown on hillsides and steep terrain, suitable for the climate and soil of this area. VIETNAM ESSENTIAL OIL is collaborating with local farmers to establish extensive Ocimum Gratissimum cultivation areas in various provinces: Dien Bien, Tuyen Quang, Hoa Binh.

CULTIVATION & HARVESTING

Ocimum Gratissimum can thrive in various soil conditions. To ensure the best soil conditions, it is recommended to apply organic fertilizers such as compost, rice husk, or straw as a base layer. Lime should be applied as a top dressing and left exposed for 7-10 days to treat soil-borne diseases.

Ocimum Gratissimum is usually propagated by stem cuttings or seeds. For stem cutting propagation, choose stems about 30cm long that are disease-free. Plant the stems in the soil and ensure they are adequately moistened. After planting, water regularly to keep the soil moist. Alternatively, seeds can be sown directly without pretreatment due to their high germination rate. Spread the seeds evenly on the soil surface and cover with a thin layer of straw. It is best to plant Ocimum Gratissimum during dry weather, preferably in the afternoon.

After planting, water the Ocimum Gratissimum regularly to promote root development. During the dry season, frequent watering is necessary to maintain soil moisture. In the rainy season, attention should be paid to drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can cause plant death.

Ocimum Gratissimum is typically planted in September and October in Vietnam, during the autumn and early winter when the weather is cool and dry, providing ideal conditions for growth.

The optimal harvesting time for essential oil distillation is when three branches on a plant, or 75% of the branches, are flowering. In northern Vietnam, 2-3 harvesting rounds per year are possible, while in the south, there can be 4-5 rounds/year. A Ocimum Gratissimum plant can be harvested for 5-10 years.

HOLY BASIL OIL PRODUCTION

At Vietnam Essential Oil, Ocimum Gratissimum essential oil is produced from the leaves using steam distillation. The essential oil has a yellow to brown color and a characteristic aroma of eugenol.

The main chemical constituents of Ocimum Gratissimum essential oil include eugenol (>75%), β-Caryophyllene (1-1.5%), Germacrene D (7%), β-Ocimene (5-6%), among others. The oil content ranges from 0.2-0.3% in fresh plants to 0.5% in dried plants.
